Job Description

The purpose of Argo’s in-house legal internship is to provide interns with the unique opportunity to get a fully immersive experience as an in-house attorney. Intern’s will work with various attorneys focusing on areas such litigation, corporate governance, regulatory compliance, contracts, and insurance law. By participating, interns will gain hands-on exposure to the legal challenges faced by insurance companies while building essential skills for a successful legal career.

Program Overview

  • Duration: 8-13 weeks (dependent on summer internship or fall/spring)
  • Location: In-house legal department of Argo Group (NYC or Albany)
  • Eligibility: Experienced law students (2L/3L) or recent law graduates with an interest in insurance law, corporate law, and regulatory compliance.
  • Credit:
    • St. John’s Law School:
      • 4 Credits (Fall/Spring) – 140 hours total, 12-15 hours per week for 13 weeks.
      • 3 Credits (Summer) – 168 hours total, 15-20 hours per week for 7 weeks.
  • Guiding Rules:
    • ABA Standard 302, 303, and 304.

Learning Goals & Objectives

  • Exposure to Legal Functions: Interns will gain hands-on exposure to legal work specific to the insurance industry.
  • Understanding of Corporate Legal Processes: Interns will observe and assist in legal matters that affect insurance companies, including contract negotiations, claims handling, compliance with state/federal regulations, and exposure to the in-house legal experience.
  • Skills Development: Interns will develop practical skills in legal research, drafting documents, case analysis, and risk management.
  • Mentorship: Interns will receive guidance from experienced in-house attorneys and other legal professionals, helping them to build valuable professional connections.

Key Areas of Focus

Corporate Governance & Compliance

  • Assisting with reviewing company policies, bylaws, and regulatory compliance.
  • Exposure to corporate governance practices, including board meetings and shareholder rights.

Contract Law & Risk Management

  • Assisting with reviewing, drafting, and negotiating insurance policies, contracts, and service agreements.
  • Learning how to assess and mitigate risk in legal agreements.

Claims and Litigation Support

  • Assisting in the preparation of legal responses for claims disputes.
  • Helping in the review of legal correspondence and supporting ongoing litigation.
  • Researching relevant case law and regulations for pending or potential claims.
  • Participation in meetings and calls with outside counsel to prepare and discuss case strategies.

Regulatory

  • Gaining an understanding of state and federal insurance laws, including the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) standards.
  • Reviewing regulatory filings and understanding how insurance regulations affect policy writing and claims.

Employment Law

  • Exposure to the legal aspects of human resources, including employee contracts, labor and employment laws, and compliance with insurance industry-specific labor regulations.
  • Employee handbook review and update if necessary.

Litigation

  • Assisting with reviewing litigation documents and case filings. Assisting with case specific research. Sit in on depositions, mediations, arbitrations, etc.

Product/Underwriting

  • We could have the intern work with Claudine and other business leads on policy drafting and comprehension (ArgoPro run off, Tax Liability, Inland Marine).
