Assistant/Associate law Librarian
Florida International University College of Law Library seeks three creative, enthusiastic, and innovative law librarians to join our team. Law Librarians provide reference, research, outreach, and instructional services offered by FIU Law Library. Successful candidates will possess a forward-thinking mindset and willingness to explore new ideas and strategies in collaboration with and in support of FIU Law Librarys mission and goals. These positions are flexible in area of appointment based on aspirations and professional goals of the candidate.
Law Librarians instruct students, faculty and staff in support of the curricular and extra-curricular programs of FIU College of Law. As a member of a forward-thinking library valued for its responsive and dynamic services, successful candidates will have some prior practical librarianship experience and a dedication to innovation in the provision of law library services, in the spirit of American Association of Law Libraries core competencies and professional practices.
Details
- Applicants could be hired in either Assistant or Associate rank, commensurate with experience.
- Law Librarians in the early stage of their career are encouraged to apply. Those enrolled in either an ALA-accredited masters program and/or ABA-accredited juris doctor or equivalent law degree program are also eligible and encouraged to apply. See Qualifications.

- No night, weekend, or holiday reference desk staffing requirements.
- Collections budget allocation to engage in collection development.
- Scholarly pursuits support through effort allocation and self-selection of individual student Research Assistant(s).
- FIU Law Librarians can teach for-credit FIU courses as Adjunct Professors, are appointed to the college where they teach those courses and receive additional compensation for those courses. This applies to both FIU Law substantive law and legal research courses, and any courses in other colleges within the University.
- FIU employees also can enroll and obtain certifications from professional certificate programs offered by the University, including instructional training and development courses. Professional development funding is available for external certifications.
Responsibilities
- Contributes to the College of Law, the profession, and grows professionally through substantive involvement in committee work, research, publishing and/or participation in professional organizations at national, regional, section, and local levels.
- Provides information services supporting the mission and scholarly pursuits of the FIU community, responding to inquiries from students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
- Creates guides, knowledge base content, blog posts, and current awareness resources.
- Conducts outreach programs tailored for student and faculty engagement.
- Instructs and trains in legal research, resources, and associated technologies via programs and workshops, including guest lectures in FIU Law and FIU courses.
- Provides research consultations to FIU Law students, faculty, and administration; develops specialized subject area expertise as needed in support of the instruction and scholarly activities of FIU Law.
- Participates in collection development by identifying new resources through current awareness and exploration related to law librarianship, legal education and pedagogy, and substantive legal subjects.
- Explores new and emerging legal research methods and technologies, including its use in research, practice, and instruction.
- Serves as liaison to legal research resource vendors.
- Supervises students and/or staff.
- Serves as liaison to FIU Libraries librarians as needed to facilitate research, reference, and outreach services.
Qualifications
Candidates must have completed one of the following degrees prior to Application, unless they are enrolled in a dual-degree program.
- JD from ABA accredited institution, or foreign equivalent. Candidates enrolled in a terminal degree program are eligible and can continue their course of study; and
- MLIS or Masters from ALA accredited institution. Candidates enrolled in a terminal degree program are eligible and can continue their course of study.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in an academic, law firm, or government law library, or equivalent experience. Experience as part of masters program field practicum acceptable.
- Experience providing reference and instructional services in a law library setting.
- Foreign language fluency.
