The Office of University Counsel seeks a Legal Fellow to perform legal duties for one year from August 16, 2026 through August 15, 2027 (approximate). Attorneys in the Office of University Counsel provide legal advice and representation to the University of Illinois, its administrators at all campuses, employees, University Related Organizations, and other agents of the University who seek such advice on behalf of the University arising out of their official University responsibilities. This position is located on the University of Illinois Chicago campus. This is a hybrid position with an in-person, on-site work expectation in Chicago, IL.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Perform legal research and prepare memoranda.
  2. Assist attorneys with contract review and approvals and engage in other transactional matters, including contract review and approval processes.
  3. Support litigation and other dispute resolution efforts.
  4. Provide assistance with regard to labor and employment matters.
  5. Assist with information requests, including subpoenas and FOIA responses.
  6. Provide informed and expedient advice and counsel related to various compliance and regulatory matters.
  7. Other duties involving the full scope of work of the Office of University Counsel as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
education:
Required: Juris Doctorate and admission (or pending Application) to Illinois bar. Applicants must have graduated or be expected to graduate from an ABA- accredited law school between September and August of the current academic year.
KNOWLEDGE AND experience

  1. Strong interpersonal skills that reflect courtesy, diplomacy, and a collaborative approach to develop and maintain effective work relationships.
  2. Advanced computer skills using Microsoft Office suite (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint) as well as proficiency with an Internet browser (e.g. Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, or comparable browser).
  3. Excellent verbal and written communications skills to effectively interact with University and departmental officials/staff.
  4. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  5. Excellent problem-solving skills to address difficult, complex issues.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
This is a Full Time 12 month academic professional position. The expected start date is 8/16/2026. Sponsorship for Work Authorization is not available for this position.
The budgeted salary range for the position is $63,000.00 – 72,000.00. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.
