Overview
Join Con Edison and be an in-house counsel working for a company at the heart of New York. Con Edison is seeking a highly skilled and experienced litigation attorney to join our in-house legal team. You will be responsible for your own docket of state and federal court cases, handling them from investigation through trial and appeal. You will represent Con Edison in complex construction (e.g., breach of contract, delay, and lost productivity claims) and commercial litigation. You will also advise clients throughout the Company, gaining an in-depth insight into Con Edison, and occasionally draft construction agreements.
Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities
- Highly motivated, self-starter who can produce results under time constraints.
- Represent the Company in state and federal court proceedings and arbitrations.
- Handle all aspects of moderately complex construction and commercial litigation, including pleadings, motions, discovery, and trial preparation, or significant litigation with supervision.
- Research and write high-quality legal memos, court briefs, and other pleadings using a plain-English, high-impact style. Draft construction agreements.
- Analyze moderately complex matters and provide thoughtful, practical, and creative solutions.
- Provide legal guidance and support to business units across the organization.
- Stay current with legal developments, case law, and best practices.
- Take and defend moderately complex depositions, argue moderately complex motions, first chair moderately complex trials, and second chair significant trials.
- Work with outside counsel, providing oversight and strategic guidance.
- Perform administrative matters in connection with the operation of the Law Department.
- Perform other related tasks and assignments.
Qualifications
Required education/experience
- Juris Doctorate J.D. from a recognized Law school.
Relevant Work Experience
- Must be admitted to practice law in the United States, and must be admitted to practice law within 12 months of hiring, required.
- Candidates for Staff Attorney need at least 2 years of the above mentioned experience, required.
- Must possess excellent presentation, interpersonal, written and oral communications and negotiation skills, required.
- Deposition and trial experience, required.
- Organizational leadership or management experience, preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
- Driver’s License Required
Additional Physical Demands
- The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
