Job Description

The UMKC School of Law Tenant Assistance Initiative plans intends to hire up to three Truman Summer Clerks to work with Truman Attorneys to provide legal representation to tenants facing eviction. Summer clerks will assist with client intake, negotiation with opposing counsel or pro se landlords, and under supervision with Rule 13 certification may make court appearances on behalf of clients of the initiative.

This is a two-month, full-time summer clerkship. Start date between June 1 and June 15. Because employment is short-term, the clerkships are not eligible for benefits.

The Fellowships and the Summer Clerkships are named for Harry S. Truman, 33<sup>rd</sup> President of the United States, who attended Kansas City School of Law and served for a time as the presiding judge in Jackson County, Missouri.

Qualifications

Students must have completed at least the first year of law school and be in good academic standing.

Preferred qualifications:

Eligibility for Missouri Supreme Court Rule 13 certification (JD students who have completed at least 46 credits and are in good standing at the School of Law), prior clinical or externship experience, strong lawyering skills, and a commitment to public service.

Anticipated Hiring Range

$5000/month
